Changes to Campus Email
September 10, 2024
On September 30th, 2024 Google will be disabling password-only access to all Google Workspaces accounts (such as ND Google accounts.) Users who have configured devices that use this older method of login will be notified directly via OIT.
Note: Many of our users will NOT be affected by this change. You do not need to do anything unless you are notified by OIT, or you find that your email stops working on Sept 30th.
In many of these cases the fix required will be to remove and re-add the account using “Login with Google”, which will follow the campus standard procedure of being asked to authenticate with Okta. After that, these devices should work with your ND Google account and your data should appear as it did previously.
This change could affect a variety of email clients, such as Apple Mail App on Macs and iOS devices, Microsoft Outlook apps on Windows, Mac, and mobile platforms, the Thunderbird email client, and potentially others. Older clients are particularly noteworthy if they have not been updated to support modern authentication methods.
Note that you can always log into your email account via a browser to check and send email if you ever find yourself unable to use an email client app on any platform. Almost all modern email functions sync with servers, so even if your app stops working and does not support newer authentication settings, it is likely your data is still available in the Gmail web interface.
More info about setting up specific email clients to use a modern authentication method will be available in the next few days, but for most apps, all it takes is to add your account using Google's secure method that asks for an Okta authentication. Most of our users are already doing this as it has been available for a while now.
