Legacy Password Update to Meet Current Password Standards

March 10, 2025

The OIT is implementing a plan to get old passwords reset to meet the current password standards. Accounts that have a password set before July 27, 2019 likely do not meet the current standards. Their passwords will start expiring on April 9, 2025 and will take place over the subsequent 6-10 business days. If you meet the expiration criteria and do NOT change your password, Okta will prompt you to change it at next login.

Please see below for more information from the OIT.

Why You Are Getting This:

Records show your password has not changed since the Office of Information Technology (OIT) introduced the current password standard  in 2019.

The Ask:

  • You must update your password by April 9. If you do not, it will expire and Okta will prompt you to set a new password at your next login.

  • To change your password, log in to Okta, navigate to your settings, and select 'Reset Password' under Security Methods. (How do I update my password?)

Why It Matters:

  • Modern strength: Passwords created prior to the 2019 password standard are more likely to be compromised.

  • Defense Against Automated Attacks: Cybercriminals often use bots to quickly try thousands of common passwords. A strong, unique password makes it unlikely that these automated attacks will succeed.

  • Multifactor isn’t enough: Cybersecurity relies on multiple layers of defenses to protect you.

Tools To Make Passwords Easy

  • Using a password manager like 1Password can generate, store, and autofill strong passwords and passphrases.

  • Enroll in FastPass for faster logins by using biometrics.
